- 3 Tbsp. cocoa
- 1 stick butter or margarine
- 1/2 c. Crisco or other shortening
- 1 c. water
- 2 c. flour
- 2 c. sugar
- 1 tsp. soda
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 1/2 c. milk
- 1 tsp. vanilla

1. Mix cocoa, butter, shortening and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
2. Sift together flour, sugar and soda.
3. Dump all dry ingredients into the melted mixture and beat a few minutes. Add eggs, buttermilk and vanilla.
4. Beat a few more minutes.
5. Pour into a greased and floured long pan and bake at 350° for 20 to 25 minutes or until done.
6. As soon as possible after you take the cake out of the oven; pour on frosting.
